Project List

East Grand Rapids Municipal Complex

East Grand Rapids Municipal Complex
East Grand Rapids, Michigan

  • Constructed in 2006
  • The project includes renovation and expansion of 52,000 square foot Library, City Hall, City Council Chambers, City Engineering and Grounds Department at the Complex.
  • Construction cost $8 million.
  • This project received LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.  Sustainable mechanical and electrical system designs were developed for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.   The project received LEED Silver Certification.  Energy saving features included “daylight harvesting” with light level sensors located along the perimeter of the building which reduced lighting requirements when daylight provided additional light to the building.  The building utilized an energy saving HVAC controls system featuring variable frequency drive fans.
  • Portions of the facility were to remain in operation during the construction period.  The project required a new electrical service and the existing panels “back-fed” to the new service.  The existing emergency generator had to be relocated to accommodate the new addition.  A new Building Automation System was provided to incorporate lighting, occupancy, and demand ventilation control for LEED energy credits.  A snowmelt system was provided for the public side walks and entrances.
  • The existing buildings were supported on driven steel H-piles due to poor soil conditions.  The new building additions were all supported on 60 foot deep auger-cast-concrete piles along with pile caps and grade beams.  Auger-cast-concrete piles were chosen in order to create less vibration and disturbance to the existing building occupants.
